The safe system of work
- Keep outside the safeguarded space while the robot can move automatically.
- Enter the space only after the correct isolation and safeguarding steps.
- Use the access, interlock and reset procedures exactly as instructed.
- Treat the robot as able to move at any time unless it is safely isolated.
- Follow the process and tooling safety rules for the cell.
Safeguarded space, interlocks & controls
- Fences, light curtains, scanners and interlocked gates protect the space.
- Opening a gate or breaking a beam should stop or prevent hazardous motion.
- Do not defeat, bypass or stand down a safeguard to enter the space.
- Emergency stops and enabling devices are there to be used, not overridden.
Required PPE
- PPE appropriate to the cell’s process and tooling.
- Eye, hand and body protection as the risk assessment requires.
- Hearing protection where noise levels require it.
- PPE supports the safeguards but never replaces them.
Pre-use checks
- Confirm fences, gates, light curtains and scanners are working.
- Check emergency stops and the cell controls respond as intended.
- Make sure no one is inside the safeguarded space before starting.
- Do not run a cell with a defeated safeguard or a faulty interlock.
Isolation, teach mode & maintenance
- Entering the space requires the correct isolation or safe-state procedure.
- Teaching and programming use reduced-speed, enabling-device controls and are for trained staff only.
- Maintenance inside the cell follows isolation and lockout procedures.
- Confirm the cell is safe before anyone enters and before restarting.
What the worker is and is not authorised to do
- Tend a cell only if instructed and authorised for it.
- Do not teach, program or maintain a robot unless trained and authorised.
- Do not enter the safeguarded space without the correct isolation steps.
- Do not defeat fences, interlocks or scanners.
What to do if something is wrong
- Stop and make safe if the robot moves unexpectedly or a safeguard fails.
- Report defeated or faulty safeguards, crashes and any near miss.
- Take the cell out of use and label it until it is checked.
- Do not attempt recovery or workarounds beyond what you are trained to do.
Training & competence
