Why cold storage safety matters
Working in chilled and frozen environments exposes people to cold stress, slippery surfaces and the systems that keep temperatures down, often alongside forklifts and stacked product. Prolonged exposure can reduce dexterity and concentration, and refrigerant or low-oxygen risks can be serious where plant is involved.

Common hazards
- Cold stress, reduced dexterity and frostbite risk during long exposure.
- Slips on ice or condensation, and trips around stacked product.
- Refrigerant leaks (for example ammonia) and possible oxygen displacement.
- Forklift, vehicle and pedestrian interaction in confined chilled spaces.
- Heavy doors, manual handling and falling stock from racking.
- Fatigue and slower reactions from working in the cold.
PPE overview
- Insulated cold-store clothing, gloves and headwear suited to the temperature.
- Footwear with grip for icy or wet surfaces, plus toe protection.
- High-visibility clothing in vehicle and traffic areas.
- Respiratory or escape equipment where the risk assessment requires it near refrigerant plant.
- PPE is a last line of defence — it does not replace safe systems of work, training or supervision.
Safety onboarding & induction
- Site safety induction before starting work in chilled or frozen areas.
- Briefing on cold-exposure limits, warm-up breaks and rotation as the risk assessment requires.
- Awareness of refrigerant alarms, leak signs and what to do if one sounds.
- Task-specific instruction and, where required, equipment training.
- A named contact for questions and for reporting concerns.
Emergency preparedness
- Know how to escape a cold or freezer room and how internal release mechanisms work.
- Know refrigerant alarm signals and evacuation routes.
- Know where first-aid provision and trained first-aiders are.
- Understand how to raise the alarm and contact a supervisor quickly.
- Keep doors, exits and escape routes clear and unobstructed.
Safety documentation
- Induction and training records.
- Cold-exposure and break rotation records where used.
- Refrigerant plant inspection and maintenance records (employer-owned).
- Incident and near-miss reports.

Everyday safety reminders
- Take warm-up breaks and report early signs of cold stress.
- Keep clothing dry and replace damp gloves promptly.

- Do not operate equipment you are not authorised and trained to use.
