Definitions
HR Manager. An HR manager leads HR activity for a team or organisation — running processes, advising leaders and often managing HR staff.
HR Business Partner. An HR business partner (HRBP) embeds with a business unit to align people strategy with business goals, in a consultative role.
Similarities
- Both are senior HR roles advising leaders.
- Both connect HR to organisational outcomes.
- Both require people and business judgement.
Differences
- Focus — a manager often owns processes and a team; an HRBP embeds with a unit and advises.
- Stance — management vs strategic consulting.
- Reporting — varies, but HRBPs typically partner with business leadership.
Use cases
- An HR manager suits running and improving the HR function and team.
- An HRBP suits embedding strategic HR support within a business unit.
- Larger organisations often have both.
