Definitions
ATS. An ATS (applicant tracking system) manages candidates through the hiring funnel — postings, applications, stages and communication.
HRIS. An HRIS (human resource information system) is the core system of record for employee data and HR processes.
Similarities
- Both are HR software that organise data and processes.
- Both can integrate with the wider HR technology stack.
- Both reduce manual, error-prone work.
Differences
- Purpose — an ATS is for hiring; an HRIS is the core employee system of record.
- Stage — an ATS handles candidates; an HRIS handles employees once hired.
- They often integrate, with the ATS feeding the HRIS at hire.
Use cases
- Use an ATS to run and measure the hiring funnel.
- Use an HRIS as the single source of truth for employee data.
- Integrate them so a new hire flows from ATS to HRIS cleanly.

Common mistakes
- Expecting one tool to do both jobs well.
- Not integrating them, creating manual re-entry.
- Choosing on hype rather than fit (and this page does not rank tools).
